My name is Maggie Carter. Former Petty Officer Third Class Maggie Carter of the United States Navy, if anyone's interested. Ducky loves to hear all about it, but he's usually in the middle of talking me down from quitting.
I'm an employee of the Naval Criminal Investigation Unit (NCIS), a relatively low-level employee, though I do have a bit of security clearance that I probably wouldn't have if I wasn't close to ten years on the job. I'm a unit secretary for the unit headed by Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. A word of advice? Never let him catch you calling him Leroy. He hates it for some reason. Personally, I think Jethro's worse. But it's his name. And he's the boss, a fact that he really doesn't remind me of as often as he should. It's usually when DiNozzo and I have regressed to the point of tossing paper airplanes at each other. But I can usually sense his coming and duck out of the way. He actually hits me so rarely that it's a celebrated event when he does.
The job doesn't leave much time for a personal life. Up until about two years ago, I didn't really have a need for a personal life. Whatever personal life I had disappeared eleven years ago when my daughter Holly was taken from me in a supermarket in Baltimore. It was funny. From the moment I realized she was on the way, I knew I wanted her more than I had ever wanted anything. I should have been terrified. I was sixteen years old, a monster each for a father and two brothers, and to cap it off, the baby I was carrying was the result of a date rape. I knew that I had to tell my father, but I kept putting it off and putting it off until one morning he found me throwing up in the bathroom. He took one look at me and knew exactly what had happened. Off came the belt, off came my shirt, yadda yadda yadda, I still have the scars on me from that one. And then more of the same treatment from my brothers. I knew that if I stayed, they would have eventually beat me into a miscarriage. So I ran away.
My baby was born and I changed my name. For my own reasons, I will not divulge my birth name. For a year after Holly came along, I stayed in a group home for young mothers and worked to get my high school diploma while waitressing. It wasn't a bad life. Most of the other girls I was living with were in similar situations, so we did for each other when we could, because we knew that eventually, the one who would need help would be yourself.
I was nineteen years old when Holly disappeared. To this day, I don't know what happened. She simply vanished in the middle of a busy Baltimore supermarket. She vanished and no one had seen or heard from her since. Until the day Tony took me into an interrogation room and told me he had news. Tony's first partner on the Baltimore force had been the man investigating Holly's disappearance. I was so sure that Tony was there to tell me that Holly's body had finally been found and I could, after almost a decade, lay my only child to rest.
Tony knew only because he'd been marginally involved with the original case. No one else knew until Tony told me that my little girl was safe and sound living in New York with her adoptive parents. Who believed they were her grandparents.
That was a year of my life right there, from the time I found my daughter to the time she returned to New York to live with her grandparents. There was a custody battle, a victory, some special Mom/Holly time, and then I decided to let Holly go back to New York. I see her fairly often, but not as much as I'd like to.
This is a character journal for an original character involved in both the NCIS and Doctor Who/Torchwood/Sarah Jane Adventures universe. Maggie is open for role playing with anyone, be they 'real' fandom characters or fellow originals like herself.
The mun does not own NCIS, Doctor Who, Torchwood, the Sarah Jane Adventures, or any other movie or television show she stumbles across in her travels. She has no money, therefore to sue her would be a waste of time, energy, and paperwork spreading across two coasts and two continents. This is all in good fun.
And so my new life began.
General Information
Name:
Margaret Anne Carter (birth name: Marjorie Joy Conner)
Nicknames:
Maggie (mostly everyone)
Margie Joy (her brother Bill)
Margaret (Ducky)
Age:
early to mid-thirties
Psychology
IQ:
a bit above average
She also has a bit of psychic energy surrounding her. It doesn't usually help her out with the big things, but it does afford her a sixth sense of some sort, rendering her unusually sensitive to other psychic energies.
Phobias/Fears:
Maggie doesn't fear men, but she is definitely wary of them. It takes a good deal of time and effort to gain her trust, because she was closed off for a very long time. She definitely has a fear of children in danger and will do anything to protect them, because she still feels like she let her daughter down. She also has serious issues about her self-worth, which have abated in the past few years due to working at NCIS and being trusted with any number of jobs and tasks. She does have a habit of second-guessing herself and she's not a huge fan of drop-ins from the Doctor(s) with no notice.
Religious Beliefs
Maggie is an atheist, mostly to spite her father the Chaplain who made her childhood a living nightmare. Though since she's realized that she has a sixth sense, she's come to believe that there is something out there that binds the universe together.
Intolerances/Annoyances:
Maggie will not tolerate seeing her friends put down. At NCIS, she hates making rushes on late paperwork, which doesn't deter Gibbs, or his agents, from handing their paperwork in late anyway.
Quirks/Habits:
Many of her quirks and habits stem from her need to "mess with" people, especially DiNozzo and The Doctor.
Family
Parents:
Maggie's parents are of no consequence. In a way, her daughter's adoptive mother has become something of a maternal influence on her.
Siblings:
Maggie has two brothers, Bill and Dan. Dan is deceased, killed in a bar fight years ago. Bill is married with three daughters, but Maggie has minimal contact with him.
Spouse/Serious Lover
Maggie has hang-ups about intimacy and relationships, which has led to an unrequited and totally hidden crush on her boss, Jethro Gibbs, in her early days at NCIS. Eventually, the infatuation cooled, leading to a deep and lasting friendship. Maggie dated a man named Danny Hamilton on and off before Holly came back into her life.
There's also a man named Cyrus who appears every once in a while, usually relating to her sixth sense.
In short, there's no husband and probably will never be. As for lovers, well, that remains to be seen.
Children
Maggie has one daughter named Holly. Holly was the product of a sexual assault perpetrated upon Maggie when she was fifteen years old. Maggie had the baby with the intention of giving her up for adoption, but couldn't go through with it after seeing her daughter. Holly was kidnapped from her mother at the age of three and rediscovered in New York fourteen years later.
Present Background
Occupation
Maggie is a unit secretary at the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), running the unit headed by Leroy Jethro Gibbs and manned by Agents Anthony DiNozzo, Timothy McGee, Mossad Liaison Officer Ziva David, and rounded out with Forensic Specialist Dr. Abby Scuito and Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard.
Education
Maggie has a GED and has been attending college classes for quite some time, trying to get a degree in something she can use. Gibbs has told her that if she qualifies to be an agent, he'll have her put on his team.
Major:
She was headed for a criminal justice major.
Activities
For a long time, Maggie didn't have many "extracurricular" activities. Her friends were the people she worked with and she would generally socialize with them if she socialized at all.
Home:
She lives in Virginia.
Friends:
Leroy Jethro Gibbs
Tony DiNozzo
Abby Scuito
Ducky Mallard
Kate Todd (deceased)
Ziva David
Romantic
Marital Status:
single
Sexual Preference:
Thus far, Maggie has preferred men, but she's open to experimentation.
Past Relationships
Danny Hamilton
Present Relationship(s)
nothing romantic
